Sea Drift by Frederick Delius
“The last great apostle in our time of romance, emotion, and beauty in music.”
– Sir Thomas Beecham on Frederick Delius
This tone poem, originally scored for chorus, baritone solo, and large orchestra, draws its text from a poem in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, whose bicentennial we celebrate this year. Delius was greatly moved by this tale of two seabirds, the lament of the male for the loss of the female and what it reveals to the boy observer, by analogy, of the nature of love, grief and the human condition. This edition contains a piano reduction of the orchestral parts.
